As it simplifies the drilling process, VERSAPIPE® is an efficient solution that saves both time and money.

 

REINVENTING GEOTHERMAL TECHNOLOGY WITH GEOPERFORMX®

In 2006, we met the challenge of developing and marketing a pipe specially designed for geothermal applications, in a market largely dominated by ordinary water pipes. Thanks to these vastly improved, cost-efficient products, we believe we can actually grow the geothermal energy market, and help make this renewable energy more popular than ever.

This idea gave birth to GEOPERFORMX®, a unique product that significantly reduces the installation and operational costs of geothermal systems. GEOPERFORMX® pipes are manufactured with an exclusive formula of nanoparticle-enhanced HDPE, which provides high thermal conductivity. This technology allows for increased heat transfer between the rock and the antifreeze and improves the relevant mechanical properties of geothermal systems. Resulting from years of research and careful consideration, GEOPERFORMX® is now a proven technology that has come of age.

  1. Studies from independent firms and current pipe users showed savings ranging from 8-20% on the full cost of a geothermal system using GEOPERFORMX®. The higher conductivity of the product significantly reduces heat exchanger length, thus reducing drilling and equipment costs. Please contact our technical department for more information.
  2. Overall, due to its thermal conductivity, GEOPERFORMX® is the most efficient geothermal pipe available on the market.
  3. The density of the grout injected into the borehole being twice higher than that of the fluid inside the geothermal pipe, stress applied on the outer wall of the pipe is therefore important. GEOPERFORMX® has a higher modulus of elasticity than HDPE, which makes it withstand higher lateral stress, especially in the long term, due to the fatigue of the materials under stress.
  4. The thermal conductivity of conventional HDPE pipes is 0.24 BTU/hr ft oF (0.42 W/m oK), while that of GEOPERFORMX® is 0.40 BTU/hr ft oF (0.7 W/m oK).
  5. GEOPERFORMX® has a stress cracking resistance equivalent to that of the PE3408. According to ANSI/CSA C448 and IGSHPA installation procedures, pipes must be carefully handled by the installer. Once installed in the borehole and surrounded by smooth grout, pipes will have very limited exposure to stress that can cause cracking in the long term.
  6. Pressures in vertical loop geothermal systems are rather low and usually below 80 psi. Water column pressure is nil, since it is offset by the water and/or grout surrounding the pipe in the borehole. The critical element is rather the pressure exerted by the grout on the pipe wall, i.e. the lateral stress. GEOPERFORMX® is more resistant to this type of constraint than HDPE pipes.
